Frequently asked questions
Can I make it with children or with zero experience?
Yes – that’s exactly who it’s for. There is no mistake you can’t recover from. Children love arranging the layers and watching things grow. If something isn’t perfect – it’s still fine. This is a process, not a test.
How long will the terrarium live?
Years – when conditions are right. Many MossBoss customers have terrariums thriving for 2–4 years and still growing. Plants change slowly, moss spreads, balance holds. It’s not a one-time thing.
Will everything die if I forget to water it?
No. A closed terrarium is designed exactly for that – moisture circulates inside and the system mostly takes care of itself for months. Many people check once every 4–6 weeks and add just 1–2 tablespoons of water if needed. Forgetting is not a disaster.
How often do I need to water – every day?
Almost never. After assembly, watch the glass: regular morning and evening condensation means everything is working. If it stays completely dry for weeks, add a little water. Most owners do this once every 1–3 months.
If mould / white fuzz appears – is it over?
Not at all. A light white coating in the first 1–3 weeks is normal (it’s a helpful fungus). Just remove the lid for 1–2 days to let it air out. If it’s too much, gently remove the affected part with tweezers. The system recovers quickly.
Where exactly should I place it – in sun or shade?
Bright, indirect light is ideal – near a window with a sheer curtain, 1–2 metres from the glass, no direct sun. Direct sunlight can overheat the inside. A desk, shelf or table in a naturally lit room works beautifully.
Can I put it in the bedroom / bathroom / on my desk?
Yes – anywhere with decent light and not too dark. Bathrooms (humid) are wonderful for closed terrariums. Desks are perfect for daily watching. Bedrooms – a quiet companion that asks for almost nothing.
If the plants look limp / yellow in the beginning – is that normal?
Yes, completely normal. Plants need 7–14 days to adjust to the new environment. Some leaves may yellow or drop – that’s part of settling in. Give them time. Most wake up stronger after 2–3 weeks.
Do I need to open the lid and ventilate?
Not usually. A closed terrarium is built to function sealed. If you see too much condensation or any odd smell – open for 1–2 days. Otherwise, leave it closed.
If I mess up the layer order or add too much water – will it fix itself?
Almost always, yes. If it’s too wet – open for a few days to dry out. If layers are mixed – the system adapts. Start calmly – over time you’ll see what works best in your space.
